Palmer Island Portrait

Palmer Island Portrait

Getting to the Palmer Island Lighthouse takes some effort. First you must do your homework and time your arrival to low tide. You park near the state boat ramp by the New Bedford hurricane barrier, then walk about a half-mile along a path until coming to a sandy beach only accessible at low tide. Then it's a short hike along the shore as you circle around the island before coming to the lighthouse. Shooting stars is difficult here because of the blazing lights of the New Bedford fishing docks to the west and the Fairhaven docks to the east.
