Coney Island Landscape
Packed among a densely populated area within the oldest gated community in the country is the Coney Island Lighthouse. Built in 1890 and over the years having neighbors like PT Barnum, Herman Melville and Daniel Webster, the property was severely damaged by Superstorm Sandy in 2012. The lighthouse continues to be Coast Guard maintained and the beacon still serves as an active aid to navigation for ships entering New York Harbor under the Verrazano Bridge. The property is cared for by the Sea Gate Community though it presently is awaiting funds to repair the storm damage within the keepers house. We gained permission from the association and the Coast Guard to visit at night and knew the ambient light from New York City would pose problems with capturing stars, but this is always an issue when getting close to crowded cities. Despite the light pollution we were still able to get a few stars in most of the images.
